The number of reindeer deemed lost due to large carnivores are reported to the Environment Agency while reindeer population size, slaughter weights and size of the harvested population is reported to the Norwegian Agriculture Agency. In parallel a substantial effort is made to monitor the large carnivore populations by Rovdata.

Within the national monitoring programme for reindeer we combine data from all these institutions with vegetation data from the MODIS programme. The data are processed and used to estimate losses due to predation and food limitation.
